Reading Difficulties Risk Screener
As part of our district's commitment to early literacy, and in alignment with state requirements, we must complete an initial reading screening within 45 days of your K-2nd grade child's enrollment.
Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, all California schools are required by Education Code 53008 to screen students in grades K-2 for risk of reading difficulties. HLPUSD will be using Amplify mCLASS DIBELS 8, adopted by our Board of Education on June 24, 2025, to conduct these screenings.
The goal of this assessment is to identify potential reading challenges early, so we can provide timely and targeted support. Research shows that early intervention significantly improves a child's reading success.
What to Expect:
If your child is in kindergarten through second grade, they will participate in an initial screening assessment and subsequent annual screenings. You will receive the results within 45 days of the screening, along with any recommended next steps if needed.
Please note: being flagged for risk does not mean a diagnosis. It simply indicates that your child may need additional support to meet grade-level literacy expectations. This information helps our educators tailor instruction to better meet your child's needs, which may include:
-
Small group instruction within the general education classroom
-
Targeted support in an intervention setting with a trained specialist
Opt-Out Option:
Screening enables us to better support our students' needs and catch them before difficulties arise. However, if you would prefer to opt out of this screening, please complete the survey within the first 15 days of enrollment so that your student can be excluded from the assessment.
