Hacienda La Puente Unified Student Journalist Empowers Peers as First-Gen Trailblazer
CITY OF INDUSTRY— With her camera poised for the game-winning shot, Los Altos High School senior Ambar Muro captures more than moments—she captures her journey from English learner to editor-in-chief of an award-winning newspaper, all while paving the way for fellow first-generation students at Hacienda La Puente Unified School District (HLPUSD).
Muro arrived in the United States from Mexico with her mother and older brother in fall 2021, enrolling as a freshman at HLPUSD’s Los Altos High School. Dedicated to improving her English, she practiced consistently in class and steadily advanced her skills. Her efforts were recognized by English Language Development (ELD) teacher and journalism advisor Adriana Guzman, who invited her to join The Conqueror, Los Altos High School’s award-winning student newspaper.
Muro quickly excelled, overcoming the challenges of writing in a second language and earning the role of editor-in-chief by her junior year. In her senior year, she began a local journalism mentorship program to enhance her craft, providing sports coverage for her school and District community.
"I hope to one day lead a sports-focused social media platform where I can highlight regional and state athletic competitions while providing bilingual content in English and Spanish," Muro said. "There is often a gap between English and Spanish sports storytelling, and I am passionate about bridging that gap to connect with a wider audience."
Committed to supporting her peers, Muro co-founded the I Am First club at Los Altos High School in collaboration with counselor Eva Muñoz. As vice president of the club, she leads college application and financial aid workshops, offering guidance, encouragement, and a safe space for first-generation students while providing them with essential resources to navigate their path to higher education.
Outside of academics, Muro works part-time and enjoys crocheting, painting, and playing basketball in her free time. Muro applied to California State University, Long Beach in fall 2024 and is awaiting admission results. If admitted, her education will include foundational courses in sports kinesiology and sports journalism, equipping her with the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve her career aspirations.
Hacienda La Puente Unified is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students, including first-generation and English learners, are supported in overcoming obstacles and reaching their full potential. Muro’s achievements reflect the strength of perseverance and serve as an example for others to follow.
“For first-generation students and those learning English, I want to share that every challenge is an opportunity to grow,” Muro said. “I’m grateful to Hacienda La Puente Unified for providing the resources and support that helped me find my voice and pursue my goals.”
