Hacienda La Puente Unified's Wellness Wednesdays: Movement and Wellness
Nancy Yeang

Dear Hacienda La Puente Unified Community,

Hacienda La Puente Unified is committed to providing robust resources and support services for all our students and fostering healthy, happy school communities that value and respect our students, staff, and families.

Boosting activity levels can positively impact physical and mental health for people of all ages. When we think of exercise, we might feel like what we’re doing isn’t enough – or that we don’t have time for a “full” workout.

However, movement includes a wide range of activities that can be adapted to all ages, skill levels, and abilities – most of which require little to no equipment. This month, we encourage you to step outside and away from your everyday responsibilities for at least five minutes and discover a form of movement that works for you.

According to Mayo Clinic, movement increases our bodies’ production of endorphins, also known as “feel-good” hormones. Adding movement to your daily routine will help regulate emotions and mood, improve self-esteem and focus, and reduce stress and anxiety, which will help you effectively respond in high-stress situations or when encountering intense events.

“Once we get into a routine of movement, we start to get rid of the daily tensions that we store in the body. Soon, you might find more clarity and focus when completing a task, more energy and optimism, and general calmness,” Equity and Access, Family Engagement Director Martha Calderon said. “Ultimately, exercise in any form can serve as a stress reliever, and help support overall wellness.”

Below is a list of recommended activities that can be done alone or with others. The social aspect of connecting with others can help keep you motivated and accountable!

Carve out up to 30 minutes a day (but try for at least five minutes to get in a new habit) for some of the following recommended activities:

  • Dancing
  • Pilates
  • Playing catch
  • Swimming
  • Tai Chi
  • Walking
  • Weightlifting
  • Yoga
