Hacienda La Puente Unified's Wellness Wednesdays: Practicing Mindfulness and Setting Boundaries
Dear Hacienda La Puente Unified Community,
Hacienda La Puente Unified is committed to providing robust resources and services that support all students and foster healthy and happy school communities where our students, staff, and families feel supported, respected, and valued.
As we prepare for the winter holidays, Hacienda La Puente Unified is highlighting the importance of practicing mindfulness and setting boundaries for a balanced life.
According to the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC), mindfulness is maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our feelings, body sensations, thoughts, and the surrounding environment through a kind and curious lens.
This month is packed with events, responsibilities, and can come with unique stressors for many people. When we practice mindfulness, it is easier to notice when we are feeling overwhelmed and burned out. Once we are in the habit of being mindful, it can become second nature to identify and set boundaries.
The Employee Assistance Service for Education (EASE) shared a few ways to help navigate family gatherings and festivities while prioritizing time to rest, these include:
1. Communicate early and directly – Inform family and friends of your availability as soon as possible and be honest about your limits.
2. Prioritize your time – Consider which gatherings or traditions matter the most and avoid over-committing.
3. Set time limits for events – Determine a specific time for how long you plan to stay and communicate with others.
4. Maintain your self-care routine – Schedule times for activities that help you recharge like practicing a hobby or arts and crafts or taking a walk or an overdue nap.
5. Restate your needs – Reshare your needs and limits and be kind and confident.
“The holiday time is a busy and often stressful time of year, and it is important to know what we need to stay healthy and centered,” Equity and Access, Family Engagement Director Martha Calderon said. “By setting clear and healthy boundaries, we can promote well-being not only during the holidays but throughout the entire year. I encourage everyone to take time this winter break to connect with loved ones and engage in activities that restore energy and bring joy.
