Hacienda La Puente Unified's Wellness Wednesdays: The Importance of Practicing Gratitude
Hacienda La Puente Unified is committed to providing robust resources and services that support all students and foster healthy and happy school communities where our students, staff, and families feel supported, respected, and valued.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, HLPUSD is spotlighting the importance of fostering gratitude as we work together to create healthy and happy school communities. Practicing gratitude can significantly improve mental health, including reducing overall stress, enhancing sleep quality and mood, and boosting patience, according to Harvard Health.
Recognizing gratitude can happen in small and big ways, from writing a simple “thank you” note to celebrating any personal victory. These small acts of recognition accumulate over time, helping shift our focus from what we lack to what we already have.
When practiced by individuals, gratitude quickly ripples out to the larger community, fostering a culture of mutual respect and support. Embracing everyday moments—such as enjoying a cup of coffee or sharing a smile with a stranger—can deepen our sense of connection and contentment.
Here are a few easy ways to start building a habit of gratitude:
· Keep a gratitude journal – Write down one thing you are thankful for each day.
· Share your appreciation – Let someone know why you value them; a simple “thank you” can go a long way!
· Reflect regularly – Tune into your feelings and be mindful of your emotions to help manage stress and remain open to gratitude.
"As we approach the holiday season, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for each of you—our students, staff, and families,” Equity and Access, Family Engagement Director Martha Calderon said. “Together, we make HLPUSD a special place where we support and uplift one another. May this season of Thanksgiving bring peace, joy, and reflection to your homes; wishing you all a warm and wonderful holiday with your loved ones."
