Los Altos High Seniors Shine in Second Annual All-Star Flag Football Game at SoFi Stadium
CITY OF INDUSTRY – Rose Portillo and Jazzy Simental, two Los Altos High School seniors, represented Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in the Los Angeles Chargers’ second annual girls flag high school All-Star Game at SoFi Stadium on Nov. 25. The event brought together top student-athletes for a showdown between all-star teams from Orange and Los Angeles counties.
Portillo and Simental were selected for the Los Angeles team after leading Los Altos to a first-place finish in the Hacienda League, with a 10-2 league record, and a CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff appearance before finishing the season with an 18-5 record. Los Altos coach Jonathan Giles nominated them for the game for their exceptional performances throughout the season. Both were among the top 35 student-athletes from Los Angeles County chosen for the prestigious All-Star Game.
"I was beyond excited when I found out I made the LA All-Star team and even more thrilled to share the experience with Rose," Simental said. "Having my entire family—11 of us—there to cheer me on at SoFi Stadium made the moment even more special. My family has always been my favorite team to be a part of, and this was a chance to celebrate that bond on such a big stage."
Simental, who served as Los Altos’ starting quarterback and linebacker, had an outstanding performance, recording three interceptions, including two she returned for touchdowns. Portillo played one drive as a running back, showcasing her versatility and determination on the field as she also played safety for Los Altos this season.
"I was so grateful that my principal, coaches, and family could be there to support me," Portillo said. "The opportunity to practice with such an incredible group of athletes before the game helped us build connections and prepare for the battle. It was an experience I'll never forget."
As flag football continues to grow in popularity, both athletes are eager to pursue collegiate opportunities and further develop their skills after graduation.
"We are incredibly proud of Rose and Jazzy for their hard work and dedication on and off the field," Los Altos principal Jeff Hess said. "Their achievements are a testament to their commitment to excellence, and we are thrilled to see them represent our school at such a high level. This experience will only add to their legacy of success and inspire future athletes at Los Altos."
